There’s a difference between being educated and simply trained. The purpose of education is not only to determine what someone can do, but also what kind of person they become as a result of their education. Literature can introduce students to life situations with which they may not be familiar.
Drama can teach oral communication.
Philosophy can teach skills of analysis and argument.
Art, literature, drama. and music are expressions of human creativity, and taking part in some form of artistic activity, either as reader or viewer, is part of what makes us human.

Congratulations! You and your colleagues have created an online art exhibit. By creating and submitting your photographic series last week, you have participated in a unique class experience. Recall that in the Week 3 Discussion your Instructor assigned partners to critique each other’s photographs. For this week’s Discussion, you will critique the photographic series of your same partner in order to analyze its intent. Your partner’s photographic series should have been uploaded to this week’s Discussion by Day 7 of last week.
Read the Jonathan Jones article from this week’s Learning Resources.
Review the websites in this week’s Learning Resources for more inspiration and examples of photographs.
Review your partner’s Final Project photographic series, which was submitted to this week’s Discussion as part of last week’s Final Project Assignment.
Consider the following questions regarding process in your partner’s photographic series:
To what extent is the work subjective or objective?
Would you consider the series conventional or challenging? Why?
What is the purpose of the elements used and the order in which the photographs appear in the series?
Are the photographs in the series clearly planned, or do they appear in a random presentation in order to gain more of an emotional reaction?
Was the series more of a documentary to report a situation to the viewer, or was the intent of the series to express or persuade the viewer to have or express a particular attitude?
Are the photographs in the series simple or complex compositions? How does this affect the intended viewpoint and understanding of the viewer?
Have delay tactics been used to create interest or ambiguity in the composition of the photographs in the series?
What is the style of the photographs in this series?
With these thoughts in mind:
By Day 3
Post a critique of your partner’s Final Project photographic series (Approximately 2–3 paragraphs). Consider each of the following:
Evaluate how the content and composition of the photographic series is presented either clearly or ambiguously to the viewer. Explain to what extent these choices may influence the viewer’s perception of the series.
Analyze how the subjects in the photographic series relate to each other.
Describe to what extent you believe the intent of the photographic series contributes to the telling of a subjective or objective story.

Find at least 6 artworks (to create 3 different comparisons) to compare and contrast to each other. They will be compared as using “art for communication” to its viewer.
THIS IS A PREPATORY/PROPOSAL ASSIGNMENT FOR A LARGER AND MORE DETAILED PAPER/ASSIGNMENT LATER ON
Please see the attached document for an example of how this assignment should look like.

You will discuss the ways that artists can use art to communicate a political or social message. Identify and support your argument with examples of at least 3 artists and at least 6 art works from at least two different countries or centuries that have used their art to comment on a social or political issue from reliable sources such as museum sites.
Once you have the artworks selected:
1) Identify each work: culture, location, date, medium, artist, location
2) In one or two sentences, explain why you selected each work. This is the beginning of a thesis for using “Art as Communication”. Not just your opinion, but moving towards what you want to prove to us about your selections for a final paper later on.
3) Thesis statement
4) Introductory paragraph: Begin with a “hook,” then introduce your topic “Art as Communication” in 3-4 sentences, and include your thesis statement as the last sentence in the introduction. As a reminder, the thesis statement provides a strong central argument for the paper, not a statement of your paper’s topic. In creating the theme for your paper and your 3 comparisons, consider examining how artists and their art works, either contemporary or historical, have been shaped by unequal social and economic relationships among various peoples in Western cultures
5) Create a 300+ word outline of your paper. Be sure to include all 6 artworks and why selected (i.e. how each one supports your thesis and relates to the topic.) This should indicate how you will break down your topic and how you intend to support your thesis. The outline should be in outline format that clearly shows your paper’s organization and hierarchy of ideas. It should be specific researched detail for your paper, not an outline with placeholders for future information.
6) Include images of the artworks, with links and correctly cited and identified in a format to match the textbook captions. Be sure to include identification and cite your sources correctly in MLA format.
