Swamped with your writing assignments? Take the weight off your shoulder!
Imagine that you are a newspaper editorialist on New Year’s Eve 1962 (i.e. after the brush with nuclear annihilation in the Cuban Missile Crisis), and you are tasked with evaluating the twists and turns of Cold War containment and its effects on American society. How effective or successful (terms you should attempt to quantify in your editorial) have presidents Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy been in guiding the nation through the Cold War? Have any of these three leaders distinguished themselves as especially wise or misguided in their approaches? Along these lines, the public is especially interested in your evaluation of the most effective means of containment, either the “perimeter” approach focused on Europe and Japan as well as “peripheral” areas like Latin America and Southeast Asia characteristic of Truman and Kennedy, or the “strongpoint” approach focused primarily on Europe, Japan, and the Soviet Union proper. Support your argument with relevant primary source readings.
